What are Orthodontics?
Orthodontic treatment carried out by a Specialist Orthodontist (who has completed a postgraduate orthodontic training programme). Being a specialist they are able to fully assess the patient and provide a range of Fixed and Removable appliances including aesthetic appliances such as 'Invisalign' and lingual appliances. The treatment provided aims to both straighten the teeth and improve the bite of the teeth and treatment time typically takes 12-24 months. Straightforward problems and treatment focused on a patient concern may take less time. NHS and private treatment is provided. Most courses of orthodontic treatment begin with a referral from a general dentist to a specialist. Depending on what treatment is needed, most patients are seen by a specialist in a local practice. Some patients are treated by dentists with extra training and experience to treat the milder cases (cosmetic teeth straightening).
