For many North Easterners there is no better view than gazing at the famous Angel of the North, and now practice manager from our Gateshead practice, Michele Keenan, can enjoy the view whenever she wants from her very own special bench, which was dedicated to her by Cancer Research UK, stating: “Michele Keenan loved sitting here... and still does thanks to everyone who Stands Up To Cancer”.
Michele was diagnosed with breast cancer last November; however after bravely beating the disease, she was dedicated the bench which is one of a series being placed around the UK as part of Stand Up To Cancer.
The benches aim to highlight the research which has allowed Michele to grow old with husband Alan and her children – a touching tribute to a fantastically strong woman and her family and we couldn’t be prouder at mydentist!
Michele’s mother died from the same disease aged 38 so when she felt a pain in the left side of her breast she was quick to visit her GP.
It took two mammograms, one ultra sound and three biopsies to find the cancer, and was followed up with a lumpectomy which uncovered a grade 2 tumor which fortunately had not spread and could be removed in its entirety.
Michele then started four weeks of radiotherapy to make sure there was no trace of the cancer remaining, resulting in her being given the all clear!
As a business, mydentist is fundraising across our 680 UK wide practice, to raise money for Stand up To Cancer, and Michele wants everybody to support us in our mission, stating: “I feel it’s important to donate, as without donations to Cancer Research the drug that I take daily may not have become available and my life could have been a different story.
My mum was 38 years old and my aunty 40 when they both died of Breast cancer 26 years ago, medicine has become so much more advanced since then and that is through donations to Cancer Research.
There’s not a day goes that I don’t think about my cancer returning, but through everyone digging deep and donating to this fantastic charity, we will eventually find a cure and my worries can eventually fade away.“
