Depending on where you received your dental degree, there are several routes to becoming a dentist in the UK.
If you qualified within the European Economic Area (EEA), visit our Overseas Dentist page for more information. If you qualified outside of the European Economic Area, you will likely need to sit the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) or License in Dental Surgery to get registered with the General Dental Council.
Most candidates sit the Overseas Registration Exam. The first step is to collect all the documents you will need and submit your application to take the exam. We recommend starting this process as soon as possible.
Find out more about what the Overseas Registration Exam or License in Dental Surgery Exam involves and how best to prepare by downloading this guide. By leaving your details, we will also be able to get in touch with you with any key developments or when new exams become available.
If you have applied to take the Overseas Registration Exam, please let us know by emailing us at [email protected] providing your GDC Contact Number so we can follow up on your progress.
Once you have passed the necessary exams and registered with the General Dental Council, it's time to speak to a member of our team.
We'll set up a conversation between you and a member of our clinical team to discuss your experiences and what you are looking for from your career. We can also arrange for you to be introduced to your future practice manager and mentor.
This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you might have and to discuss what parts of the UK you're most interested in working in.
Once you have passed the mydentist clinical conversation, we can make you an offer and help you get your visa.
The visa you will receive is a Health and Care Visa. This means you will be prioritised when applying and you will get immediate access to benefits like the ability to bring in dependents (you will need to apply for this separately), free NHS care, and access to free education for any children you may have.
At mydentist, we will fully fund your visa for five years, at which point you will be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain. This means you will be able to continue working at mydentist indefinitely without the need for a visa and without any restrictions on where or how much you choose to work.
Once you have your visa, our team will help you compile all the necessary documents and checks to start in practice, as well as setting you up with a trained mentor who can support you in your first months in practice.
We will cover all costs of your mentorship which will allow you to practise NHS dentistry and benefit from the stability of an NHS contract as well as parental leave funding and an NHS pension.
After you have gone through our onboarding process you will benefit from an induction before starting in your new role in practice.
You will be working with a mentor and delivering a mixture of NHS and private treatments, giving you the perfect mix of security and flexibility, and allowing you to develop your career in a way that suits you.
At mydentist, we are the leading destination for outstanding international dental graduates looking to build their careers in the UK.
We have unrivalled experience in supporting clinicians throughout the process of getting registered with the General Dental Council and starting in UK practice, and we have helped more than 1,600 dentists from over 60 different countries make the transition.

The Overseas Registration Exam is a rigorous assessment designed by the General Dental Council (GDC) to ensure that dentists trained overseas meet the standards required to practise dentistry in the UK safely and effectively. It evaluates clinical skills, knowledge, and professionalism to uphold patient safety and maintain high standards of dental care.
To apply for the Overseas Registration Exam, you need to apply through the GDC website. The application process involves providing documentation of your qualifications, evidence of English language proficiency, and payment of the required fees. Detailed guidance on the application process can be found by downloading this guide.
Eligibility criteria for the Overseas Registration Exam may vary, but candidates must generally hold a recognised dental qualification from a reputable institution and demonstrate proficiency in English. Review the specific eligibility requirements outlined by the GDC before applying for the examination.
Preparation for the Overseas Registration Exam involves comprehensive study of dental theory and practical skills. Candidates should familiarise themselves with the examination format, review relevant study materials, and practice clinical scenarios. Attending preparatory courses or seeking guidance from experienced professionals can also be beneficial. We have partnered with DY Patil to offer an ORE preparatory course. Learn more about the course here.
After passing both parts of the Overseas Registration Exam , overseas dentists can apply for full registration with the GDC. Upon obtaining full registration, dentists can practise independently in the UK and explore various career opportunities, including joining mydentist, where they can contribute to high-quality dental care.
We’re proud to be an award-winning provider of dental and oral healthcare – an achievement possible due to the dedication of our self-employed clinicians, practice support teams, and Support Centre teams ensuring patients receive the highest level of care and patient safety across the nation.
Our compassion doesn't stop in our practices or when it reaches our patients. We are proudly partnered with Dementia UK, helping those with dementia manage poor oral health due to difficulty caring for themselves or communicating their needs. We also have a long-standing partnership with Bridge2Aid - providing a sustainable solution to basic dentistry needs in remote communities overseas.
We recognise that without self-employed clinicians, practices support teams and support centre teams it would have been impossible to achieve the incredible level of care and dedication that we are able to provide to our patients. That’s why we prioritise recognition for the hard work every single day.
We're proud to be a place where every colleague can be themselves. With flexibility and choice that enables you to balance your life and career, you can make a real difference through the work what you do.
