How do overseas qualified dentists access opportunities in the UK?
If you qualified from the European Economic Area (EEA) and have a primary qualification in dentistry, then you can register with the General Dental Council and practise in the UK. To work as an NHS dentist, you will need to apply for a performer number through a separate process. We can support you with this process if you choose to work as a clinician at mydentist.
What is the process to be considered for an opportunity at mydentist?
When you apply for a role within mydentist or register your interest on this page, we'll set up a conversation between you and a recruiter who specialises in supporting overseas qualified dentists who are looking to relocate and work in the UK.
Your recruiter will discuss your experience, what you are looking for from your career and where in the UK you'd like to live and practise.
We then set up a clinical call with a member of our clinical leadership team, this is your first opportunity to engage with one of our clinicians, ask questions and gain an understanding of what it is like to work with mydentist. For example, you may want to ask about NHS dentistry, how the mydentist mentoring programme works and what support you can receive as an overseas dentist.
The recruiter will then set up practice visits with locations they recommend are a good match for you and where there is an available mentor. The practice visits can be held face to face or virtually and typically include you being introduced to the practice manager and your proposed clinical mentor, who is an experienced associate dentist working in the practice.
Can I get visa sponsorship to work at mydentist?
If you require visa sponsorship to work in the UK, we will be able to sponsor you. This process is initiated after you accept an offer to work at a mydentist practice and would be part of our pre-onboarding process.
The visa you would receive would be a Health and Care Visa. This means you would be prioritised when applying for your visa and you will get immediate access to benefits like the ability to bring in dependents (you will need to apply for this separately), access to NHS healthcare and access to education for any children you may have.
We would be able to fully fund your visa for five years, at which point you would be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain. If you choose you can then continue working at a mydentist practice indefinitely without the need for a further visa and without any restrictions.
What is the onboarding process like for overseas clinicians?
Once you have accepted an offer, a member of our onboarding team will be there to support you through the process. They can provide guidance and can assist you in organising the documents and checks needed for you to begin working.
You will sign a mentoring agreement, which explains the relationship between you and your mentor. We can provide support to cover the costs of your mentorship, allowing you to both practise NHS dentistry and benefit from the stability of an NHS allocation – with NHS benefits such as maternity/paternity pay, sick pay and an NHS pension.
Once you are nearly ready to start in practice you will be booked to attend a comprehensive induction in Manchester for nine days, this includes hands on practical training and really helps set you up for a successful start in practice.
There’s never been a better time to join mydentist. Register your interest to start you journey today.
