What do I need to do to be able to work as a dentist?
To become a dentist in the UK, you will need to complete an undergraduate dentistry degree course, typically five years study at dental school, followed by a period of foundation training, or vocational training in Scotland, which is one year of supervised practice.
Once you have completed your formal education, you will need to register with the General Dental Council, which regulates dentists in the UK.
What is the process to be considered for an opportunity at mydentist?
When you apply for a position at a mydentist practice or simply register your interest on this page, you will be assigned a recruiter as your main point of contact.
Together you will discuss your experience and your needs to help them understand what is important to you in your first role in primary care. They will have a wealth of experience in supporting newly qualified dentists through the application process, so they will be prepared for you to take the time you need for your decision and the knowledge necessary to answer any questions you may have.
You will have a call with a member of our clinical leadership team, this is your first opportunity to engage with one of our clinicians and ask questions to gain an understanding of what it is really like to work with mydentist from a fellow clinician.
At every step of the process, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns you have with your recruiter. You will also get the opportunity to meet members of the team you may work with in the future. Your recruiter will recommend a practice, or practices, for you to visit based on your needs.
What is the average split of NHS and private for a newly qualified dentist working in a mydentist practice?
Newly qualified dentists usually choose to start with an NHS allocation, this is an excellent way to build confidence and improve productivity, whilst also building relationships with patients.
At mydentist we support clinicians to deliver the dentistry they want to, which includes striking the balance that is right for them between NHS and private dentistry. At mydentist, newly qualified dentists on average achieve a 50/50 split between NHS and private within two years of engaging with mydentist.
We offer training and guidance on how to improve productivity, treatment mix and use of smart diaries. There are also several development pathways available via the mydentist Academy for those who wish to pursue special interests such as aligners or implants.
What support is available for newly qualified dentists?
Our clinical support network is made up of several experienced dental and orthodontic professionals, who are there to provide you with advice and support at all stages of your journey.
You will be in regular contact with a clinical development advisor (CDA), who can help support you as you start working in practice and with your career aspirations. They can signpost training and support and connect you with relevant peer support groups or CDAs for specific areas of study, such as implants or clear aligners. They can also help you connect you with your peers and invite you to peer review sessions.
As a newly qualified dentist, you will be invited to a two-day face-to-face welcome event taking place annually in September.
